Wednesday, 21 November 2007

Cooking with beer is rapidly becoming an accepted fashion. Beer improves the flavor of many other ingredients.

Chocolate Stout Cake

Ingredients:

¼ cup cocoa powder to dust the baking pans

2 sticks butter or margarine

1 cup stout or porter

2/3 scant cup Dutch-process dark cocoa powder

1 scant tsp salt

2 cups unbleached flour

2 cups sugar

1 ¼ tsp baking soda

2 extra-large eggs

½ cup sour cream

Instructions:

Heat oven to 350 degrees.

Lightly dust 2 greased 8-inch pans with cocoa powder.

In a heavy saucepan or microwave oven, heat butter, beer, and cocoa powder until butter melts. Cool.

Sift dry ingredients together, add the beer-cocoa mixture and beat thoroughly on medium speed for 1 minute.

Add eggs and sour cream and beat on medium speed for 2 minutes.

Pour batter into prepared pans and bake at 350 degrees for 24 to 30 minutes.

Place pans on wire rack to cool.

Spread each layer with a thin coat of chocolate frosting.

Stack the layers and cover the sides with frosting.

Serve.

Citrus Lager Marinade (Perfect for fish or chicken)

Ingredients:

1 ½ cup lager

1 tsp cracked black pepper

2 cloves garlic, peeled and minced

1 stalk lemon grass

Pinch of salt

Instructions:

Slice lemongrass length-wise and remove center stalk and discard outer, fibrous husk.

Coarsely chop stalk and place in food processor with ingredients.

Blend well.

When settled, marinate fish or chicken up to two hours – no longer for fish because the citric acids will cure the fish.

Well these recipes sure do sound delicious but so do these chocolate cupcake recipes and these cupcake frosting recipes.

The Wonder Of Cooking With Beer
Tuesday, 20 November 2007

Just like drinking beer, the nicest thing about cooking with beer is that there are no hard and fast rules attached to it. While you do get recipes that specifically call for beer, it is not absolutely necessary. All you need to do is take your regular, everyday dish, replace some or all of the liquid with beer and watch your ordinary recipe get transformed into an exotic dish with a unique, one-of-a-kind flavor. Experimentation is key. Experiment using different combinations of beer with different dishes and create several variations of the same recipe. Don’t forget to make notes though. You may need to re-create the magic several times over if your friends and family call for an encore.

A simple addition of beer adds body to and transforms the very character of the dish. It helps enhance the flavor of some of the ingredients while blending in the other flavors of the dish. And if you find any of your recipes lack a certain something that you cannot pinpoint, a little beer will work wonders and impart that little zing the dish may have been lacking. Considering that beer is made up of grain, herbs, yeast and water, it’s like adding several different ingredients at once.

Though the rules of cooking with beer are not rigid, it will hold you in good stead to keep in mind these few tips when experimenting with beer.

• Whether you are following a recipe or creating one of your own, only cook with a beer that you like to drink. If you do not like the taste of the beer as a beverage, chances are you will not like it in the recipe too.

• As with any other liquid, the flavor of beer gets magnified as it evaporates during the cooking process. Choosing a strong beer to begin with would mean the dish will tend to have a bitter taste when it’s done. To avoid this from happening opt for a sweet stout or a beer with a smaller percentage of bitter hops when using beer to make brown gravy.

• Whether you add beer at the beginning of the cooking process or at the end depends upon the dish as well as the type of beer. If you are looking for that subtle aroma of the hops in your soup, it is best to splash on a little bit of your favorite light beer when the dish is almost done and only after you’ve reduced the heat. However, if you want to impart a deep rich flavor to your stew, you may prefer to add a darker beer at the beginning and let it cook with the rest of the ingredients. The end result will be a stew with the sweet, roasted flavor of barley that is blended in with the flavors of the remaining ingredients.

• Beer is great for marinating and tenderizing tougher cuts of meat and is also excellent when used to glaze poultry and ham.

It's not beer but this black forest cupcake has brandy in it and this chocolate cupcake recipe is delicious.

Secret of the Salsa
Tuesday, 20 November 2007

Is it a condiment, is it a sauce or is it a type of food? The academic debate raging around the classification of the salsa is as hot as the salsa itself. However, true salsa-lovers leave the pigeon-holing of salsa to the academicians, while they heartily tuck into their favourite type of salsa with gusto. To them, it does not matter what category the salsa comes under; a salsa by any other name tastes just as spicy!

The versatility and the adaptability of the salsa makes it an easy dish for even a novice cook to whip up. Once you’ve got the basics you can mix and match different combinations of ingredients to create a salsa that has its own personality. Learning to cook a salsa is not much different from learning to dance the salsa; it requires a lot of fire and rhythm and you can innovate as you go along.

At its most basic what you would require are chopped or pureed tomatoes and finely chopped onions, chilies and cilantro. Other than that you can vary the techniques and try out various combinations of vegetables, herbs and spices for salsas that taste different every time. Of course you’ll want to write it down so that you’ll remember the proportion of the ingredients the next time you want to reproduce the very same-tasting salsa.

In additional to tomatoes, the other fruits and vegetables that go well in any salsa include tomatillos, melons, mangos, pineapples, papayas, peaches, plums and cucumbers. Bell pepper, avocado, jicama, radish and fresh corn kernel add flavor, texture and color to any salsa. Parsley, oregano, basil and mint taste exceptional when combined with fresh fruits and vegetables.

Hints & Tips that will help you enjoy your salsa journey

The most common reason why people hesitate to prepare salsa at home is because it does involve a lot of chopping and slicing, which can be fairly time-consuming. While some amount of chopping is unavoidable, don’t let that put you off. Remember, innovation is key when preparing the salsa. If you are chunky-salsa aficionado, then you would have to take the time to chop the necessary quantity of tomatoes, garlic and herbs.

For a smoother salsa that tastes just as good and saves you loads of time as well, puree the tomatoes, herbs and garlic in the blender. Can't find a big enough bowl – what about your crock pot bowl. Don’t forget to toss the garlic and herbs into the blender first, run the mixer for a while and only then add the tomatoes. Garlic and herbs are easier to mince or puree without tomatoes, which tend to make the mixture too runny.

Most other salsa ingredients are better chopped by hand so you can control the size and shape of the cut pieces. More than the taste, this has a huge influence on the way the finished salsa looks when it is served.

Onions have to be diced by hand and never pureed. Onions that are pulverized in a blender release an overwhelming aroma that is sure to overpower the whole dish.

Should you cook your salsa or serve it uncooked? Raw salsa, also called “Salsa Cruda” has a refreshing, tangy taste. On the other hand roasting the garlic, tomatoes and chilies will give your salsa a rich, smoky flavor that is sure to please any salsa-loving palette.

Serve it as it is or go on to use it in cooking. Salsa adds flavor and texture to many dishes this slow cooker chicken recipe uses salsa to great affect.

Experiment! Experiment! Experiment!

Although cilantro is the mainstay of most traditional salsas, play around with other herbs such as oregano, basil, parsley and mint to give your salsa a mysteriously different taste.

As for which type of chili is best, your only limiting factor is the choice available to you at your local food market.

Experiment with different herbs and flavors as well as spicy, sour and sweet flavors. After all, that’s how all family secret recipes started out.

Decorating your patio
Friday, 26 October 2007

Your patio and porch are part of your home living space. Patios and porches should be functional and stylish since they are an extension of the home&rsquos living area. Designing and furnishing a porch or patio is sometimes more difficult than other areas of the home because they are located outdoors. With so many different types of furnishings available for porches and patios it is important for homeowners to come up with an idea first and then work towards the end vision.

Some individuals will want a comfortable area complete with a hanging hammock chair and a Kingsford charcoal grill. Some homeowners envision a custom wood deck designed furnished with bamboo or rattan furniture. Creating a porch or patio that makes living easy and that reflects your home&rsquos design is important. If you are happy with your patio and porch then this is what is most important. Your budget and personal style must be evaluated first before buying any furniture for your porch and patio. When it comes to porch furnishings, there are many options available including custom made porch swings and synthetic wicker.

Take a look at the options and then buy what you like that also fits your budget. You can easily design your porch and patio by keeping these suggestions in mind. It is great to complete your porch and patio and be proud of what you have accomplished.

Getting into the Halloween spirit
Wednesday, 24 October 2007

Halloween is a fun holiday to prepare for with the kids. There are lots of fun things to do to get ready for Halloween and get everyone into the spirit of the holiday. A really fun thing to do the weekend or so before Halloween is to visit a pumpkin patch so that each of your kids can pick out their own pumpkin. Then you can go home, make hot chocolate and everyone can carve their pumpkin. Don't forget to roast the pumpkin seeds! It will make for a really fun day for everyone.

Once the pumpkins are carved it's time to decorate the house with spider webs, ghosts, witches and broomsticks. It's also really fun to record some scary music that you can play whenever anyone comes over and when the trick-or-treaters come to the door.

Next, the costumes...you can either make them or buy them. I'd recommend going online for ideas. Once each child knows what they want to be you can put the costume together with what you have and then buy or make the missing pieces.

Finally, it's time to send out Halloween ecards to your friends and family so they know you are thinking of them. This is a great way for the kids to keep in touch with family and friends especially the ones they won't get to see on Halloween.

Have a wonderful and safe Halloween!

Fall Grilling Tips
Wednesday, 17 October 2007

When you think about all the ways you can prepare foods in the summer you are probably thinking about grilling. The smell of the burgers as they get half way done, the seasoning gently wraps around each patty as it lingers up in the air towards your nose. Corn on the cob, potatoes, other garden fresh vegetables with grill marks on it where you have placed it on the grill it is a beautiful thought. Just because it is fall you have no reason not to cook on your grill. Grilling outdoors when it is cool out is the perfect time to grill.

To get the most out of your grilling experience, here are some helpful hints to getting the best out of grilling in the fall.

- Layer the bottom of your grill with fresh herbs like lavender. Use the lavender to send flavor to your meat. You can also add seasoned wood, like hickory or apple to give it a grilled season flavor.

- Fix some of your favorite summertime grilled foods one last time to kick off the new season.

- Don’t overcook the meat. Set yourself a timer if you are not staying around your grill. You may forget about it and ruin your dinner.

- Create your own Barbecue sauce to smother your steaks in.

- Don’t be afraid to experiment. Sometimes the best discovery was accidental. Try fish, chicken, beef and more.

- Slowly cook your food. Cooking fast will only harm the taste. You need to set a low temperature that will cook the food thoroughly but not fast. This will allow the seasoning to season your food.

Until now, grilling has been for men. They brag about their capabilities to grill the best steaks and we have stood back and said nothing, until now. Women Use the grill more often now. Women are taking grilling to a whole new level. Women are joining other women across the US for a barbeque competition. Cooking on the grill can mean less mess in the kitchen. You can even buy indoor grills that can replace your mini grill on your stove because these grills stand alone. The next time friends and family come over to enjoy a barbeque you can be the one bragging about it.

Don’t forget dessert. Some of the best tasting desserts come right off the grill. Grilling fruits and other desserts gives them a different taste and allows you and your guest to enjoy a different taste. Don’t shut the grill off just because your main course is done, add the dessert. Getting outside even in the fall can give you the fresh air you need to stay healthy and spend some time with your family enjoying a meal. While you wait for your food to get done you may decide to play a game or rake leaves. Enjoy your fall grilling during the middle of the day when it is the warmest time of the day. You can enjoy more time outdoors doing whatever it takes to make your fall grilling fun.

And for those times when you can't be bothered with the grill a crock pot beef recipe is just what you need.

Choosing Laminate Counter Top
Tuesday, 02 October 2007

There is a whole host of wonderful reasons that make laminate counter tops one of the most popular choices. Whether you are looking for the beauty, versatility, cost, or maintenance, you will find the laminate counter top the best.

Easily Adaptable To A Variety Of Different Shapes

The specific style of design of the laminate countertops makes them readily adaptable to a variety of different shapes. In order to make these countertops, a sheet of plastic is put over a formed fiberboard base while laminate is used to make the surface visible and attractive. You can easily get the base material shaped and cut in order to accommodate the desired design for the surface.

Versatility

When it comes to appearance, no other countertops are as versatile as the laminate ones. Because of their specific design, the laminate countertops are easily available in a wide array of colors and surface textures.

Relatively Affordable

In comparison to other countertops, you will find laminate countertops much more affordable. Therefore, if you are limited in terms of your budget, there cannot be a better answer than laminate countertops.

Easy Maintenance

In terms of maintenance as well, the laminate countertops get an edge over their counterparts. When it comes to cleaning them, they are the easiest of all the countertops. All you need is mild cleansers or soft abrasives to clean the dirty spots and mark ups on your laminate countertop. However, for stains you should not use harsh abrasives; instead, you should try using baking soda mixed with lemon juice. They will do the trick for you in the most efficient and convenient way.

A Word of Caution

If you want to make the best use of all the tremendous features that a laminate countertop has to offer, make sure that you keep in mind the following things.

• Scratches caused by any sharp object on the surface of the laminate countertops cannot be removed. Therefore, it is better to use proper cutting boards and prevent the surface of the countertop to be exposed to sharp objects.

• Since laminate countertops use formed plastics, they are highly susceptible to burn and scorch. Once the damage is done, you will be unable to remove the burn mark. Therefore, in order to avoid the damage, make sure not to use hot pans or pots directly on the surface of the counter top.

However, the pitfalls of the laminate counter tops are negligible in comparison to the loads of benefits they have to offer. In fact, most of the pitfalls are applicable to almost all types of countertops, but you will not be able to find all the features of a laminate counter top in any other counter top. All you need is to take proper care while using it, and you will find the laminate counter tops a rich addition to your home improvement. Wherever you need flat surface workspace, laminate counter top will make the best answer.

The kitchen is almost complete; now all you need to do ischoose the right rug.

The modern hot tub and its origins
Monday, 01 October 2007

think most of us can appreciate the need for some quite relaxation after a hard and stressful day. Some opt for the benefit of a quick drink as an ideal way to wind down. However why not choose a more healthy and invigorating alternative that will literally soak your stress away? One of the best uses you can make of your outside space is to install your own hot tub. Imagine just laying back and washing away the troubles of the day.

The Romans built baths because they believed in the value of hot springs. There are numerous water healing facilities available. Hydrotherapy is one of the oldest, inexpensive and safest methods for treating many common problems and bringing stress relief.

Hippocrates was a great advocate of drinking and bathing in spring water 4 thousand years before the birth of Christ. As you can see owning your own hot tub would put you in illustrious company.

Thanks to the efforts of the Jacuzzi brothers; a massive spa and hot tub industry with numerous manufacturers has developed for the benefit of consumers. The brothers understood the advantages of moving warm water at an early stage and went on to develop a pump that would evolve into the jets in a standard hot tub. From these early beginnings the hot tubs of today are very high tech with the jets placed in just the right position for optimum relief.

The most modern tubs can be customized to include televisions, lights, music and more. You can even install a remote control that will turn on the tub and get the water warm from anywhere with a cell phone; now thats convenience. You might consider the style of hot tub that offers seating in a vertical position. You dont always want to be in a lounging position. Spas and hot tubs are good for whole body treatments and the water should come to shoulder level for maximum stress relief. A hot tub is soothing to the nerves and helpful for bladder and urinary problems, mild colds and low fevers. A dip in the hot tub should last at least 20 minutes.

Hot tubs magically circulate warm water & air through a system of high pressure jets to provide therapeutic muscle stimulation and relax anyone in the tub. These jets are clustered to massage specific groups of muscles at the same time.

They can be directed to stream in a moving pattern and air can be injected for a tingling, bubbling sensation. You can concentrate these jets in a particular body part just as a massage therapist could do as well. Do you feel the knots in your neck? Position the jets to pulsate on those knots and you will feel better.

Water has such great therapeutic properties its no wonder that more people are buying spas and hot tubs for their master baths or backyards. You can find tubs that are just for the two of you if you are empty nesters, or look for one that is big enough for the whole family and the neighborhood. Never underestimate the benefits from the warm water when it comes to relieving stress. Dont let the stresses of the world ruin the end of your day. Get in your spa or hot tubs and just enjoy.

Tips for Selling Your Structured Settlement
Tuesday, 25 September 2007

If you become injured due to the carelessness or negligence of another, you may be entitled to monetary compensation. Often, victims receive their compensation in the form of a structured settlement. A structured settlement is one that is paid over an extended period of time rather than all at once.

Sometimes, people decide that a lump sum payment is preferable to their structured settlement. A structured settlement can serve as a steady source of income, but is not right for everyone. Let's say you want to buy a home, pay off large amounts of debt, or invest. In these cases you might decide that a lump sum payment would benefit you more than a structured settlement. Luckily, you have the right to sell your structured settlement in exchange for one large payment.

The buying and selling of a structured settlement can be a good situation for everyone involved. The injured party gets the money they need all at once, and the settlement buyer gets a surefire investment. It's a simple concept -- the buyer will offer you a lump sum amount that is normally around 15% less than the total amount of your structured settlement. This 15% is what they end up earning after the structured settlement is complete.

It's important to carefully consider all the pros and cons of selling your structured settlement before making a decision. Once you sell, you no longer have access to your structured settlement payments, which now belong to the buyer. If you have questions about whether or not selling your settlement is the best thing for you, consult with a trusted financial advisor.

Structured Settlements: What Are They?
Tuesday, 25 September 2007

Structured Settlements are used to pay out a large sum of money over time. Much the same way that you pay your credit card bill every month, a creditor uses a structured settlement to pay out what they owe to a person on a regular schedule. Most structured settlements are purchased annuities, paying out over time on an annual basis.

The most spectacular form of structured settlements are lottery payments. Rather than deal with the financial hit of handing out a single check for tens to hundreds of millions of dollars, state governments with lottery programs buy an annuity that’s guaranteed to pay out the entire promised amount, usually at a discount – the annuity holder invests the money in bonds or other stable investments, sufficient to pay out the annual payment and turn a bit of a profit for the annuity holder.

The other common use of structured settlements is in court damage cases and they work in much the same way. A plaintiff wins a judgment in court for damages and the defendant will typically buy an annuity to pay out the damages on an annual basis, putting the payment schedule in the hands of the annuity holder. From a corporate tax purpose, purchasing the annuity is a one-time-charge and there are several advantages to doing this. The structured settlement type payment is the result of changes in federal laws dating back to 1982 and is meant to provide a steady stream of income for the recipient to pay for long term care for disability or injury payments.

Private citizens can also buy annuities, though this is less common than it used to be. Annuities bought this way were used extensively as supplemental retirement income, before the regulations on IRAs, 401(k) programs and Roth IRA’s allowed people to get more direct control over their retirement investments.

If you’re the beneficiary of an annuity, it can present some problems for you. First, there’s some small temptation, when getting that big annual check, to blow it on something celebratory, knowing that your day job can support you for the rest of the year. While this can be fun, it’s very rarely sound financial planning. The second problem posed by an annuity is that the payments usually don’t increase over time. This is the chief problem with them as a retirement strategy. Bringing home $500 a month in the mid-80s was a decent retirement income, assuming the house and car were paid for. Trying to squeeze by on $500 a month 20 years later is considerably more difficult, as day to day expenses rise with inflation on an annual basis.

Most annuities are set up as regular payments for 10, 20 or 30 years. Sometimes an emergency strikes and an annuity payment isn’t always the best way to handle it. At that point, there are several firms out there that will pay you cash for an annuity. They offer you a large sum of cash up front and buy the annuity from you.

Knocked Up DVD Movie
Tuesday, 11 September 2007

Knocked Up is the very opposite of a storybook romance, and also the very model of a great comedy for our values-driven time: Slacker shlub Ben (Seth Rogen) meets career-girl beauty Alison (Katherine Heigl) at a sloshy bar in L.

Knocked Up includes plenty of laugh-aloud moments and many more that generate subdued chuckles. Knocked Up DVD Movie is a different kind of film, a refreshing mix of the whip smart and the heartfelt. Knocked Up is the hilarious new comedy from the makers of 40-Year-Old Virgin.

Knocked Up runs for 132 minutes -- way long for a laffer -- but there's a reason that Apatow is the new king of comedy: He won't settle for skin-deep.

Cigarette Smoking and Teenagers
Written by Administrator

Why do people start smoking and continue smoking? Most of them start when they are teenagers for many reasons. They want to look cool, fit in with their peers, and are more likely to smoke if their friends and family smoke. Most adult smokers started smoking before they were 15 years old. Smoking creates an image that many teenagers associate with smoking. It's being tough, cool, sexy, attractive or as a form of rebellion.

Why do they continue to smoke? They continue to smoke because it is habit forming. The chemicals, especially the nicotine reduces the withdrawal symptoms between cigarettes. Smoking is an addiction.

Teenagers can quickly become addicted to the nicotine habit. They begin smoking because their friends smoke, and continue to smoke especially in certain situations. Teenagers smoke if they are talking on the phone, after eating, with caffeine products or alcohol, and just sitting around with their friends. They don't necessarily notice a craving just smoke automatically in certain situations.

Two thirds of those who contract chronic fatigue syndrome are women. These statistics regarding CFS are typical but it can occur within any group and in any society. This elusive disease can remain undiagnosed as people explain away their symptoms as simply feeling under par.

For school-age children and teens backpacks can be very helpful and useful. They come in a number of different sizes, shapes, and colors and allow teens to express their individual personalities. Which they are also helpful by the many different compartments that help them tote notebooks, books, papers, lunches, and all the other number of items which teens need to carry. Backpacks are considered safer to carry than a shoulder bag or purse because the strongest muscles in the body support the backpack.
